The state of Arizona has been one of college basketball’s biggest disappointments this season, having last won on December 13th. The Sun Devils will be looking to lose their steak by four losses to rival Arizona on Thursday.
Whether for personal reasons, injury, or tracing COVID-19 contracts, Arizona State has seven this season missed at least two games of its top 10 players in terms of points per game. As a result, what was expected to be an explosive offense was in 135th place per possession, 135th place.
Arizona was significantly better on offense, ranking 26th in points per possession, with five different players averaging more than scored 10 points per game. More importantly, the main offense in Arizona is reaching the free-throw line and finishing ninth in the country on free-throw attempts per offensive game. The state of Arizona has allowed opponents to make an average of 24.2 free throw attempts per game, which equates to 320th place and the 347 DI teams that have played this season.
Combine that with that of the State of Arizona is being decimated on the glass and ranks 331th in rebound rate, while Arizona ranks eighth in that category. This leads to a mismatch that speaks strongly for the wildcats.
