Indonesian rescuers searched for survivors Thursday after an illegal gold mine collapsed and at least three people were killed. More are said to be buried under the rubble.
A landslide on Wednesday evening buried the remote site in the Parigi Moutong district of Sulawesi Island, where at least three workers died while around 15 survivors were pulled from the rubble.
At least five more people are listed among the missing, but more workers could be buried, the authorities said.
« We’re trying to get the victims out, » said Andrias Hendrik Johannes, head of the local search and rescue agency.
« But we do not yet have complete data on the total number of miners buried by the landslide or the number of people missing. »
Unlicensed mines are common throughout the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago and there are frequent accidents in the area.
Last year 11 miners died in Sumatra after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall. Another nine people were killed in a landslide in an abandoned gold mine on the island.At least 16 people were buried alive when a mine collapsed in North Sulawesi in 2019.
