Alexander Bublik is an extremely talented player who has been recognized for big things. However, he struggled to put everything together, often losing focus and throwing matches. Alexei Popyrin is currently 114th and has been around for a long time as a top young talent on the ATP Tour. Until recently, however, it largely failed to exhaust this enormous potential. He got off to a strong start in 2021, highlighted by a quarter-finals in Adelaide before impressing David Goffin at the Australian Open. Like Bublik, he has big serve and big ground hits, with persistence and mental struggles being his downfalls. He’s been very impressive here this week and impressed Marin Cilic in the semi-finals in two tight tiebreakers. He served very well in this match and held his nerve during tense moments to upset the former Grand Slam champion. He’s the underdog here, but his confidence will be sky high and he has a big game that can do harm.
While Popyrin was very impressive here in Singapore this week, I see his run finally coming to an end. Bublik is very difficult to predict, but he seems to be playing with new focus and motivation and I expect him to be too much for the young Aussie. Alexander Bublik wins in straight sets.
