At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack on Aden Airport shortly after a plane landed with a newly formed Saudi. supported cabinet for government-held parts of Yemen.

Hours after the attack, a second explosion was heard around Aden’s Mashiq presidential palace, in which cabinet members including Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik and Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed al-Jaber were brought to safety, media said.

Loud explosions and gunfire could be heard in the airport attack shortly after the plane arrived from Riyadh, witnesses said.

Aden health official Mohamed Robeid gave the death toll and said 50 people were injured and the death toll could rise.

The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres previously said 17 people had been treated for wounds in their hospital in Aden.

It was unclear what caused the second reported explosion and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

« We and the members of the government are in the temporary capital Aden and everyone is fine, » tweeted Maeen from the Mashiq Palace.

« The cowardly terrorist attack against Aden Airport is part of the war that is being waged against the Yemeni state and its great people. «

Al-Jaber tweeted: « Peace, security and stability will reign thanks to the strong will of the Yemenis and their courageous government. «

The new cabinet unites the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi with southern separatists to achieve the Saudi goal of ending a feud among Riyadh’s allies.

The two groups are the main Yemeni factions in a Saudi Arabia-backed alliance based in the south that is fighting the Iranian-focused Houthi movement that controls the north, including the capital, Sana’a.

The southern port city of Aden has become violent over a rift between the separatists and Hadi’s government, which was driven from the capital by the Houthis in 2014.

The separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks the independence of South Yemen, declared self-government in Aden in April, sparked clashes and hampered efforts by the United Nations to forge a permanent ceasefire in the overall conflict.

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition announced the new cabinet to share power this month after more than a year of intense Saudi mediation between the government and the separatists.

« This unacceptable act of violence is a tragic reminder of the importance of urgently getting Yemen back on the road to peace. «
