England’s Aaron Rai won his second European Tour title after beating compatriot Tommy Fleetwood in the playoffs at the Scottish Open on Sunday

Rai shot eight birdies in the last round to sign a brilliant 7 under par 64 and set the goal at 11 under before Fleetwood finished with a 20 foot birdie putt to force extra holes at Renaissance Club

World No 17 Fleetwood seemed favorite to lift the trophy when he parted the fairway from the tee in the 18th by four after Rai found a deep bunker

But Fleetwood moved to three putts right off the green, while Rai saved a par to seal his first Rolex Series title

Rai’s victory propelled him to the top 5 of the Race to Dubai rankings and the top 100 of the world rankings

“It’s unbelievable,” said the 25-year-old. “I played a lot in Scotland growing up, I dreamed of competing in a European Tour event in Scotland

“Being able to play there was amazing a few years ago and being able to go even further is an amazing feeling

« Every time you’re up there in Race to Dubai, whether it’s to win, whether it’s in the top three, the top five, it shows a great degree of consistency with some really great results »
