The AFL will remind Dustin Martin and Lance Franklin of their responsibilities after the couple are seen in a Sydney cafe accompanied by game identity Eddie Hayson.
Three-time Richmond Premier Winner Martin reportedly traveled to Sydney earlier this month and met Hayson, a great gamer and former brothel owner. The couple joined Sydney Swans star Franklin and former soccer player Tom Derickx at Cafe Giorgio in Kings Cross.
According to the report, Franklin was unaware that Hayson happened on Jan.. December would show up with Martin in the restaurant, nor had the Swans player had any contact with him. Martin and Hayson reportedly left the venue at least half an hour after arriving.
There is no evidence of wrongdoing from those who attended the meeting, but the looks of two of the AFL’s most prominent players at Hayson’s company have rang alarm bells as the league tries to avoid the risk of compromising the integrity of the too affect game in question.
« The AFL is constantly reminding players and clubs through ongoing training and briefings to be careful and be aware of who they are associating with, » an AFL spokesman told Guardian Australia.
Sport Integrity Australia (SIA), a new entity established in June to encourage better collaboration between police, regulators and sports leagues, reportedly brought NSW police to the attention of the meeting.
SIA, headed by former Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority Chairman David Sharpe, declined to comment when contacted by Guardian Australia. The NSW police were also contacted.
Hayson has been linked to and subsequently exempted from multiple allegations of gambling and match fixing in the NRL.
In 2006, he was accused of getting inside information on a bet that won him and a teammate an estimated $ 2 million. An NRL investigation cleared him up and he has not been prosecuted.
He was also linked to match fixing in two games with the Manly Sea Eagles in 2015. He again denied involvement in misconduct, and in 2017 the NSW police force used to investigate the claims was closed without charges.
