The Ross River virus found its way into Gippsland and issued a health warning to anyone living in or visiting the area.
The disease was discovered in mosquitoes on Ninety Mile Beach and includes symptoms such as headache, fever, rash, and fatigue. People can also experience pain and stiffness in their joints.
Victoria Health has said the best way to protect yourself from the virus is to avoid being bitten by mosquitos.
« Protective measures include regularly using mosquito repellants containing picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin, wearing long, loose-fitting clothing outdoors, and ensuring that accommodations, including tents, are properly covered with mosquito nets or umbrellas are equipped, ”said Victoria Health.
« A blood test at the onset of the disease can indicate a possible acute infection and should be repeated two weeks later for confirmation. ”
It usually takes nine days for symptoms to appear after exposure, but they have been known to last up to 21 days.
Everyone in the region is advised not to be unprotected outside, especially at dusk and at dawn when mosquitoes are active. It is best to cover as much as possible in light, loose clothing and covered footwear.
