Australia was here 133 for 6 in its second essay on the third day of the Boxing Day Test.
The tragic end to Ajinkya Rahane’s masterful knock used to give new life to Australia, but India still managed a big lead in the first innings of 131 runs before knocking out 326 in the second Test here on Monday.
In response to Australia’s first innings of 195 total, the Indian innings folded up for lunch as they could only add 49 runs to their overnight total of 277 for five after losing wickets in a cluster on day three.
Ravindra Jadeja (57) turned 15. Test fifty and added 123 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Rahane.
Rahane’s vigil ended when he, his first in Tests, was exhausted after making a classy 112 in 223 balls using 12 boundaries.
The call was from Jadeja and the run was unnecessary, but still the all-rounder looked solid in the middle before being set up by a Mitchell Starc (3/78 in 26 overs). .
The Australian fast bowler with the left arm tested Jadeja with a barrage of short balls, and the trick worked when the rounder pulled one straight to the deep midfielder in the center of the wicket to get a polished 57, the three limits and its trademark sword celebration.
On a day 3 MCG court with hardly any demons to be seen, the Australian bowlers posed no serious threat to the well-established Indian beat duo Rahane and Jadeja.
The hosts desperately needed a wicket and given the way Rahane had bet it had to be a run.
Just before his half century, Jadeja started for an unnecessary single after playing it towards the short cover and Rahane responded positively instead of sending him back but could barely hold his own at the end of the striker despite his best shot.
That brought India back when Australia tried to make its way back. Nathan Lyon (3/72 in 27. 1 overs) and Josh Hazlewood (1/47 in 23 overs) then polished off the tail. PTI
