World News – AU – Australia Domed cupboard test as Will Pucovski and Marcus Harris make massive statements

The Victorian duo crushed South Australia’s attack on Saturday in an opening stand worth over 300 races

The Redbacks scored just 200 in their first innings before 22-year-old Pucovski and former Aussie opener Marcus Harris easily passed the total as they opened the stick

After 104 overs, Pucovski was undefeated on the 187, Harris was on 195 steps out while Victoria was 0-392

Victoria’s highest opening grandstand before the game was 375 set by Bill Woodfull and Bill Ponsford in 1926

The century is Pucovski’s fifth in first-class cricket, but his first since October 2019, which was also scored against the Redbacks

Pucovski has been around setting up the Australian test before being part of the squad that faced Sri Lanka in 2019, and the long tour of England from which the Ashes 2019 squad were chosen.

His strike on Saturday is timely with India touring Australia just around the corner, while races in the Shield will count for a lot given there is no test form for selectors

It could also play in the hands of Harris, with the first 28-year-old still looking for a way back to the test squad after being dropped halfway through the 2019 Ashes.

He is making a strong case for re-selection with his century which has just emerged from a 2019-2020 shield campaign during which he averaged 4,911

Harris was also Australia’s top scorer on India’s last visit in 2018-19, when he scored 258 points to 3,685 in his debut

The starting openers in Australia are David Warner and Joe Burns, who started the Shield season with scores of 7 and 29

Selectors suddenly have a slew of stick options lined up for test spots with races flowing in the early stages of the shield

Starters and contenders who have already made it at least a century this season include Cameron Green, Travis Head, Marnus Lauschagne and Tim Paine, while underdogs Shaun Marsh, Michael Neser, Ashton Agar and Moises Henriques have all had debuts promising
