Australian music legend Max Merritt died in Los Angeles hospital after being diagnosed with rare and serious autoimmune disease

The musician, of Max Merritt and the Meteors fame, died Thursday, he was 79 years old

He was battling Goodpasture syndrome, an autoimmune disease where the body mistakenly makes antibodies that attack the lungs and kidneys

His manager and friend Wal Bishop shared the heartbreaking news of his death in a statement Friday

« Max has been on dialysis three days a week since he got sick in 2007, » he said

‘He really fought and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him

« Max hadn’t been able to perform live for the past 13 years but, when he felt up to it, he went to the studio to record, » Bishop said.

‘He even shot a video to accompany the songs, it’s a shame he’s not here to see it’

He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2008 alongside Dragon, Russell Morris and The Triffids

The ‘King of Soul’ was born in April 1941 in Christchurch, New Zealand, but eventually made his home in Australia

He moved to the UK in the 1960s before moving to Los Angeles in the 1970s

Skyhooks rose to fame in the mid-1970s with hits such as Horror Movie, Ego is Not A Dirty Word, All My Friends Are Getting Married, and Women in Uniform

The band stopped performing regularly when frontman Graeme ‘Shirley’ Strachan died in a helicopter crash in Queensland in 2001
