Australian pro surfer Mikey Wright was caught on camera rescuing a person who was swept away by a strong current and rough waves in Hawaii.
Wright was sitting on the beach, presumably on Oahu’s north coast, when he saw a beachgoer being swept away after a set cleaned up the beach. They were quickly overwhelmed by the current.
Beachgoers could see them trying to reach the person when Wright said, « He needs to be rescued. « .
« You can’t save him, » a woman said back to Wright before the Aussie hands over his cell phone, which is still filming, jumping the fence in the sand and running into the surf.
A strong current and strong waves breaking on the reef made the rescue even more difficult as the two had been submerged several times.
Wright and the swimmer were hit by a series of heavy waves in shallow water before a group in the sand could reach them and lead the couple to safety.
Wright comes from a family of world-class surfers, including the Owen siblings and two-time women’s world champion Tyler, who hailed from the south coast town of Culburra.

The video, which was posted on Instagram by both Wright and Tyler, has been viewed thousands of times and shared by surfers around the world.
