After the miserable start of their BBL10 campaign in which they lost three of their first four games – the other was a washout against the stars – the Scorchers produced a full performance with bat, ball and on the field to win with seven wickets with 14 balls to spare and spoil Adelaide’s New Years party.

In the hunt for 147 runs at the Adelaide Oval, Scorcher’s opener Jason Roy set the tone with an energetic yet risk-free start to the innings after his team won the bat flip and moved into first field.

Roy smashed seven fours and a six while also tackling star spinner Rashid Khan and producing two early backward sweeps to make a statement for the T20I player of the decade.

The Englishman was on 49 and the Strikers crossed between 0 and 57 in the middle of the eighth run before Roy got a shot wrong and was caught just before Wes Agars bowling. A few balls later, fellow opener Liam Livingstone was released thanks to an excellent diving catch from wicket keeper Alex Carey to keep the scorchers on shaky ground.

But Josh Inglis (44 *) and Mitch Marsh (38 *) calmly took control of the competition and methodically reduced the run rate to less than six runs per over. They first helped the scorchers secure the bash boost point after they got hit at the end of the 10th. 76th place and then set up an unbeaten stand of 67 runs to secure full points for Perth.

The win came despite the best efforts of Strikers captain Carey, who previously threatened to single-handedly deny Perth’s win.

Carey was the only Strikers batsman to establish himself on the crease against a Scorcher bowling attack that consistently took wickets at badly needed times.

The left-hander scored a well-put together stroke of 82 balls out of 59, including 12 fours and a six to help the strikers get 9-146 out of their 20 overs – the BBL’s second-lowest total this summer.

The Scorchers stunned the Strikers early and removed the formally strong openers Phil Salt (4) and Jake Weatherald (6) within the first three overs of the game.

Carey then quickly found his groove and counterattacked his side, striking five lines over the first eight overs to stabilize the ship.

Carey and Matt Renshaw (19) scored a crucial third wicket score of 48 before being caught in the middle of great Scorchers Paceman Aaron Hardie, who finished his first two overs with 2-7.

Carey turned 50 and threatened to forge major partnerships with Jon Wells, 2, Matt Short, 6 and Rashid Khan, 8, but the trio all held out less than three overs to ensure the momentum generated was quickly restricted.

Scorchers Paceman Jhye Richardson was the bowlers’ choice, playing 3-19 against aggression and tempo.

After winning their first six New Year’s Eve bouts, the Strikers lost their last two after losing three times to the Sydney Thunder 12 months ago.
