South Australia set to reform abortion laws, with MPs pushing for conscience vote on proposals to remove it from criminal laws

A bill to reform South Australia’s abortion laws has been submitted to parliament, which seeks to treat it only as a health issue and not as a criminal issue

Attorney General Vickie Chapman says legislation involves a new, highly regulated medical model that will govern termination of pregnancy

« Our proposal removes abortion completely from the criminal law, a measure that would bring us in line with all other Australian states and territories, » Ms Chapman said Wednesday.

« This is based on the understanding that this is a medical procedure that should be treated like any other health problem »

Under proposed laws, an abortion can be performed by a doctor for up to 22 weeks and six days of gestation

After this period, a doctor can only perform an abortion if they see another practitioner and both feel that the procedure is medically appropriate

Ms Chapman said it was time for South Australia to address the issue of abortion in a « modern and contemporary » way

The bill was introduced to the state’s upper house by Social Services Minister Michelle Lensink, who said it was time for reform

The Australian Medical Association has said it strongly supports legislative change that will not lead to more abortions

« It is a women’s health issue and for too long I have seen women who are really damaged, hurt and going through traumatic decisions, » said WADA President Chris Moy

The bill will go to a conscientious vote by MPs in both the upper house and the House of Assembly

« The current bill dates back to 1969 and is really behind best practice across the country, » Prime Minister said

But he said he would also wait and see the form of the bill presented to the assembly before making a final decision
