Britain’s ‘tiered’ approach to bringing the coronavirus under control appears to be working, the Foreign Secretary said on Friday, as EU neighbors France and Germany imposed new controls on the movements almost as strict as their original spring locks

Europe and the United States have become the current danger zones for COVID-19, which was first identified in China in December, during a global crisis in which more than 4,494 million people people were infected and 1,178,943 died

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the local approach could work if everyone played by the rules

Britain has recorded more than 20,000 new cases per day on average over the past week, and an average of over 200 deaths per day in the same period

When asked if a nationwide lockdown was now inevitable, Raab replied, « No, I don’t think it’s fair, but what guides us is the virus rate

« We have seen evidence since we started to implement this tiered approach that the rate of increase has slowed, » Raab told BBC TV

The government has adopted a three-tier brake system for local areas, although opposition Labor has called for a temporary lockdown to break chains of infection

France and Germany announced new lockdowns this week as infections on the continent surpassed the 10 million mark and hospitals and intensive care units once again filled with patients

Bars, restaurants, sporting and cultural events have been limited or closed in several other European countries

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Friday that EU countries should be ready to impose further restrictions

« We have to overcome this, if at all, with restrictions on daily life to break the chain of transmission, » she said during a video conference of EU health ministers, according to his notes

The White House Coronavirus Task Force has warned that much of the United States is grappling with a « relentless » spike in COVID-19 cases as the number of infections reported on Thursday reached a new daily record of over 91,000

The hardest hit regions of the West and Midwest encompass a number of battlefield states expected to play a central role in Tuesday’s US presidential race between incumbent Republican Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden

« We are going in the wrong direction, » said Dr Anthony Fauci, senior member of the task force and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Trump has played down the virus since its emergence, mocked Fauci, social distancing and wearing masks, and has repeatedly said the country is « turning the curve »

Russia has also seen coronavirus cases swell in recent weeks, authorities reported 18,283 new infections on Friday, the highest tally since the start of the pandemic, and 355 deaths — Reuters
