Fulham have postponed a second game in a row in the Premier League after the latest round of coronavirus testing showed more positive results. (More football news)
The Premier League postponed Fulham’s clash with Tottenham, much to Jose Mourinho’s frustration, hours before Wednesday kick-off after several members of Scott Parker’s squad tested positive for the virus.
Parker – who recently had to self-isolate – confirmed on Friday that he was preparing as usual for Sunday’s planned away game with Burnley, despite several players missing.
However, the trip to Turf Moor has been canceled to further disrupt the Premier League season. Organizers have insisted that despite rising infection rates in the UK, the competition continues and there is talk of a possible « breaker » suspension of competitive football in England.
With most of the country’s regions under strict lockdown measures, the Premier League confirmed that 18 players or employees tested positive this week.
In a statement on Saturday, Fulham said: « Following further new positive results from recent COVID-19 tests, the club can confirm that this Sunday’s away game in Burnley has been postponed after talks with the Premier League and advice from medical Teams.
« The well-being of our players, staff and their families continues to be of paramount importance and we wish those who tested positive a safe and speedy recovery. «
It is the fourth Premier League game to be postponed this season due to coronavirus infections. In early December, Newcastle United and Aston Villa had canceled their match, while Manchester City requested on Monday to push back the duel with Everton after three more players tested positive.
However, Pep Guardiola’s team have been able to get back to training after no more positive cases were recorded and the game against Chelsea continues on Sunday.
