However, the start of the Cougars West Coast Conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Pepperdine has been postponed in the following contact tracking protocols due to a positive Pepperdine COVID-19 test that came back Wednesday.

It’s the first BYU game to be postponed this season. The team had already left for Southern California when the announcement was made.

Pepperdine is on pause and the Waves games against BYU and Saturday’s competition against Saint Mary’s are over.

The Cougars (9-2) will play in San Diego on Saturday (6pm). m. , MST).

It’s too early to get details on this BYU Pepperdine game, but plans are made to reschedule it.

It seemed fitting that the Cougars and Waves would play for both teams at the WCC opener on New Year’s Eve.

BYU’s last regular season game – and the final win of the 2019-2020 season – took place in Malibu, California in February. 29.

That day, in front of a crowded Firestone Fieldhouse that included many BYU fans, Yoeli Childs scored a career high of 38 points with 17 of 27 shots and collected 14 rebounds in an 81-64 win.

With the victory, the Cougars got the No.. 2 seeds at the WCC tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

After interviews with reporters after the game, Childs held out his hand, as he normally did in these settings, but then quickly withdrew his hand and offered an elbow thrust instead.

A few weeks later, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA tournament would be closed as the world and life would change.

The Cougars, who have won four consecutive competitions, hope to continue to win, challenge the perennial league favorite, and become No.. Rank 1 Gonzaga, and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament in March.

« We know each other so much better than we did 11 games. I don’t know if I’ve ever learned as much about a non-conference team as I did about these guys, ”said coach Mark Pope. « There is so much left to learn and so much more to do, but it was a deluge of information that is really dynamic and changes every game. « . I’m really proud of the progress we’ve made. We know each other much better. If we can continue in this direction, we have a chance to be a really great team by the end of the season. ”

Senior Guard Alex Barcello leads the Cougars, averaging a team high of 16. 9 points and 4. 8 templates. He shoots 63% from 3-point range, which is No.. 1 in the nation among players who shot 40 or more 3-pointers.

In this game at Pepperdine last season, Barcello broke his left wrist. This injury was never reported at the time and few were aware of it.

Rather than undergo surgery immediately and sit out for six weeks, Barcello chose to compete in the WCC tournament in which the Cougars fell to Saint Marys (51-50) in the semifinals.

Barcello’s injury only occurred a few minutes in the game against Pepperdine. After stealing a passport, he ran to the basket and was fouled so hard that he landed on his head and wrist.

His teammate, Jake Toolson, hurried from his seat on the bench to check on Barcello. Toolson was kicked out of the game.

Trainer Rob Ramos initially diagnosed the injury as a severe wrist sprain. When Barcello’s wrist swelled the next day, x-rays showed the bone was broken.

But Barcello decided to play anyway and his wrist was wrapped up for the game of Saint Mary. In 32 minutes he went 1 of 2 off the 3-point line and ended with three points, two assists and a rebound.

« I could still dribble and pass with it, but it was definitely painful, » said Barcello last spring. « Obviously I didn’t shoot a lot in this game. I played well. It was painful, but I was still able to push through and use it. It was a pain that I had to push through. ”

Now that the Cougars are stepping into the conference game, Barcello is pleased with the way his team is playing and what it can achieve.

« We’re 9-2 right now, » he said. « I’m really happy for these guys, the blanket we have and how much we have to learn. ”
