World News – AU – Chiefs drop on chargers, 38-21 to complete the regular season

The Chiefs' reserves got off to a quick start but ultimately fell to the chargers on Sunday

. .

The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Los Angeles Chargers (38-21) on Sunday afternoon to complete the regular season.

The Chiefs rested several of their regular starters, with the top seed already locked in the AFC playoff picture, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes. That meant the backup signal caller Chad Henne got the cut for Kansas City – this was his first start since 2014 – to work with several young players who got an expanded look at the live game action.

Many of them made the most of it too, leading Kansas City to touchdowns on each of their first two holdings, but the Chargers built a multiple-point lead by the end of the second quarter and didn’t look back.

Henne completed 23 of 32 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns and found the end zone through the air on the inaugural drive from Kansas City. Henne, 35, found Darwin Thompson for 37 yards on a quick third down pass to throw the chains off balance in the Chiefs’ third game, and just a few snaps later, Henne hit wide receiver Byron Pringle for a 3-yard score, to put Kansas City in front.

Los Angeles responded with its own touchdown ride when quarterback Justin Herbert Donald Parham came close for an 8-yard score, but Henne had the Chiefs back up just one series later with a 12-play, 72-. Yard scoring drive, which Thompson interrupted with a 1-yard touchdown jump.

The chargers tied things up again in their next series and knotted the score at 14 points apiece. Los Angeles added a safety late in the second quarter to take them two points when the defensive end dismissed Isaac Rochell Henne in the end zone. After the ensuing free kick, the Chargers drove down the field and expanded their advantage when Herbert rushed ahead for a 1-yard touchdown.

That made it a 10 point advantage at halftime, but the Chiefs managed to keep Los Angeles off the board to start the second half as Alex Okafor and Tim Ward consecutively collected sacks around the opening the chargers thwart series.

For Ward, who made his career debut on Sunday, it was his first sack as a pro.

The Chiefs’ subsequent ride ended when a fourth downhill attempt was just inches short, and the chargers added to their advantage after taking the offensive when Herbert hit the broad receiver Mike Williams for a 48-yard Score found.

Los Angeles carried that 17-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs continued to struggle. After Williams’ hit, Henne led Kansas City on a 74-yard 9-game drive that ended with an 8-yard hit for Thompson.

Thompson scored two goals that night, making it the first multi-touchdown game of his young career. In fact, the previous round six pick had only one career touchdown before scoring two on Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers quickly responded with a score of their own, however, as Kalen Ballage rushed forward for a 1-yard touchdown to later restore Los Angeles to 17-point lead and essentially seal the game.

Thompson led Kansas City a distance of 110 meters and put together the most productive outing of his career. A total of seven different players received a pass for the Chiefs, while Ward, Okafor and cornerback Deandre Baker each won sacks.

Kansas City ended the regular season with a 14-2 record for the franchise year. After a first-round goodbye next weekend, the Chiefs return to Arrowhead Stadium to begin the postseason divisional round in their quest for another title.
