. . More than two decades after pledging to give his heart and soul to Collingwood as president, Eddie McGuire will leave a true game changer, writes Glenn McFarlane.

. .

Eddie McGuire rose in October 1998 – at the age of 34. Birthday – in a virtually bloodless coup in the presidency of Collingwood.

His shock announcement on the members’ forum on Monday evening that he will step down at the end of next year after an extraordinary 23 seasons means that he will go by himself – no matter what happens next year.

It’s the right reputation for the 56-year-old as he looks to the next phase of his life and the right reputation for the club when it comes to ushering in a new era.

McGuire will retire as the third-longest club president in VFL-AFL history and the second-longest president of the Magpies after Harry Curtis.

But with his uncanny knowledge of Collingwood’s often-shattered political history, it would not have escaped his notice that 70 years ago – 1950 – after a long and largely successful election, Curtis was unceremoniously voted out of one of the club’s bitterest elections to rule.

But with a handful of agitators calling for his resignation and calling for change in the past few weeks, and the club still grappling with member setbacks after its controversial trading period, the prospect of a smooth transition now seems assured.

In 1998, McGuire’s first official speech as president, raised the bar: « Tonight is a moment of truth in shaping Collingwood’s future in the 21st century. century. «  »

« What I can wholeheartedly promise you is that every decision by Collingwood Football Club is made for the benefit of the club and nothing else. «  »

He kept his promise to give his heart and soul to Collingwood, a fact that even his greatest critics found difficult to argue against.

In more than two decades there have been some landmark achievements mixed with some controversial moments – some of which were self-inflicted – that had a detrimental effect on him and the club.

In 1998 the club was revived from a financial and soccer basket and transformed from a suburban organization into a national brand with international sponsors.

In late 1999, Mick Malthouse was astutely appointed senior trainer. the move from Victoria Park to Olympic Park; securing the 15th. VFL-AFL premiere of the club in 2010; the succession plan for coaches from Malthouse to Nathan Buckley (some of which are still debating the pros and cons); the advance to 75. 000-80. 000 members; the creation of an AFLW team and a national netball team; and the club’s philanthropic efforts to feed, accommodate and give hope to the less fortunate in the community.

There was Adam Goodes’ radio gaffe, as well as ongoing legal issues and an ongoing internal review of the club culture after Heritier Lumumba alleged racism while at the club.

There have been some off-field discipline issues from players that embarrassed the club and the president. Debate about the merit of the coach handover; and recently solved a major salary cap issue with fan favorites Adam Treloar and Jaidyn Stephenson departing in a fire sale that enraged the fan base before a solid draft period relieved some of the tension.

McGuire’s promise to make Collingwood the AFL’s largest club came true in 2010 after the Magpies won the flag.

If it hadn’t been for one of the biggest pressure surges in Dom Sheed football history in 2018, the Magpies might have been 16th. Cup locked in her trophy cabinet in the Olympic Park.

Love him or hate him, few presidents have shaped the role like McGuire, and for all his perceived strengths and weaknesses, there has never been any doubt about his dedication to the club.

His presidency may be coming to an end, but given his passion for the club, it’s fair to assume he won’t be lost to Collingwood.
