The left-hander played 77 test matches and scored 5138 runs with an average of 43. 54, with 12 centuries.

He is one of only five Englishmen to have played a friendly in the third century, scoring an unbeaten 310 against New Zealand at Headingley in 1965.

Edrich also had a successful career for Surrey, becoming one of the few batsmen to hit 100 top-notch centuries.

He made history when he was named Man of the Game in the first one-day international match and scored 82 points at the MCG in 1971 against Bill Lawry’s Australian team.

« With John’s death, we lost a productive and fearless batsman – one of the select few to have more than 5. Have scored 000 runs for England, « said ECB boss Tom Harrison.

« His duels with some of the best fast bowlers in the world have been legendary, and it is testament to his ability that his 310, not knocked out by New Zealand in 1965, remains the fifth highest Test score by an English batsman. He will unfortunately be missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends. «

Edrich died of natural causes in his home in Scotland 20 years after being diagnosed with a rare, incurable form of leukemia known as Waldenstrom in 2000.

« But I’ve been tired for a while. After doing blood tests, they discovered leukemia. It was quite a shock. You can’t fight it. You need to have confidence in your counselor and the treatment. «

Last year Edrich was named to Surrey’s greatest team of all time, as partner of the legendary Jack Hobbs at the top of the rankings.

« John Edrich was truly one of the best players to have ever played for our club and his passing is an incredibly sad moment for all of us, » said Richard Thompson, Surrey chairman.

« From watching his brave and charismatic eyelashes, to sitting next to him in our committee room, to learning the game, it was a great honor to be able to call John a friend.

« On behalf of all members of the club, I would like to extend our condolences to all of John’s friends, family and fans around the world, both inside and outside the game. «
