When Argo took home the Oscar for best picture in 2014, Ben Affleck was – in the middle of a career renaissance – considered one of the most promising directorial talents in the game. His debut, Gone Baby Gone, was an underrated and solid conundrum. In 2010, The Town became (and continues to be) a huge hit, and Argo brought home gold for the awards season. Sure, Live By Night was a massive disappointment, but before that Affleck had created near-perfect filmography for himself, which made the prospect of making a Batman movie all the more enticing.
As we now know, this Affleck-Batman project never materialized as the DCEU essentially collapsed after the extremely lazy Justice League was released. As a result of that film’s failure, the future of the entire franchise was reshaped and Affleck’s Batman film was thrown in the trash.
In a recent interview with Yahoo! Joe Manganiello, who would have appeared in the film as Deathstroke, recently revealed more enticing details about the project than comparing it to a David Fincher film.
In the original spot for The Batman, Deathstroke performed a similar demolition job in Bruce Wayne’s life, systematically destroying his public status as a senior citizen of Gotham City and his private existence as a Caped Crusader. « It was a really dark story where Deathstroke was like a shark or a horror movie villain who cut Bruce’s life apart from the inside out. It was this systemic thing: he killed everyone around Bruce and destroyed his life to make him suffer because he felt that Bruce was responsible for something that had happened to him. ”
In addition to The Game, Affleck’s proposed plot also bears strong similarities to « Born Again, » a classic arc from Frank Miller’s run in Marvel’s Daredevil comic, loosely adapted to the screen in season three of the Netflix series. « It was really cool, very dark and very tough, » says Manganiello wistfully. “I was very excited for it. So it was with Snyder, who teased The Batman in the original version of a post-credits scene that appears at the end of the Justice League, where Deathstroke pays a visit to Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. Unfortunately, despite Affleck’s imminent return to the cloak and hood for The Flash, it looks like we’ll never see his vision for a Batman project, as the running of the franchise has now been turned over to Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson. Manganiello is set to get another bang, however, playing Deathstroke in the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will be tuned to his HBO Max early next year.
Also, The Batman – the next entry in the Dark Knight canon – will be released at this point on Jan.. March 2022.
