Exclusive: SFX catches up with Jodie Whittaker before the festive Doctor Who special: « The family of four is no more »

Doctor Who is returning this New Years Day for a festive special, Revolution of the Daleks, and while this is certainly much-needed good news, the return of Thirteen will be marked by grief: Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole who are playing Companions of the time lord leave the series.

« Well, as a doctor, I’ll say the family of four is no more, » Jodie Whittaker tells SFX magazine in the new issue, which includes a huge Doctor Who preview.

« Personally, I am absolutely devastated, » she continues. « Without going into the details of what happened to what happened, just knowing that it was the last scenes for me with these actors. They both carried me to my trailer. I haven’t cried like this in a long time. Brad couldn’t handle it at all. Tosin said, « I really can’t stand you getting so upset. « . I think that sums up how I feel. Then I was like [pretending to cry] ‘Don’t leave me with her!’ «

Chris Chibnall, who serves as the showrunner on Doctor Who, also spoke about the two actors leaving the series and teased what will be in Revolution of the Daleks.

« It’s a 70-minute episode, » reveals Chibnall. « It’s Ryan and Graham’s final episode on the show. So it’s big and epic. It’s emotional. We also have Captain Jack back in this episode. So the special is busy before you even get into the future. The future is very, very exciting I would say. ”

Of course, he doesn’t reveal anything about how Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh are leaving the show or whether the door is open for their return. « I can tell you it’s very emotional – we all saw it in tears. It’s a really important part of the mix of the special where you get a lot of thrills, a lot of fun, a lot of humor, a lot of daleks and a lot of emotion. ”

Chibnall and Whittaker continue to talk about Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks in the new edition of SFX, out now. The festive special will air on New Years Day on BBC One.
