Eddie McGuire blamed his club’s turbulent trading period when he announced his decision to step down as President of Collingwood in late 2021.
During a fan forum Monday night, McGuire said certain conditions created the « perfect storm » for the club’s trading period, when a number of stars were ousted from the club for minimal return.
Specifically, he said that at a time when the club was quiet to protect player confidentiality, the AFL’s commercial radio sparked hysteria around Collingwood.
« There’s a new dynamic now and it’s commercial radio, it’s great for people who love the footy and are following it all the time, great for the media, the AFL, (but) it’s not great for the people who involved – bad luck, ”said McGuire.
« But what happened after a month was » Will Jeremy Cameron come to Geelong? « There came a new story that was pretty big, it was a big story, and it took off from there.
« The guys tried to protect the confidentiality that was given to different players but also tried to get the deal we had to make under difficult circumstances, so it was a perfect storm this year. ”
The biggest move was that of midfielder Adam Treloar to the Western Bulldogs. Collingwood is reported to raise an additional $ 1. 5 million of the new contract over the next five years.
McGuire became President of Collingwood in late 1998 and was nicknamed « Eddie Everywhere » for his prominent role in the media and his outspoken opinions.
On the field, Maguire’s magpies won only one flag – in 2010 – but they also made major finals in 2002, 2003, 2011 and 2018.
McGuire played a key role in the appointment of Mick Malthouse as coach before the 2000 season.

“There will always be a reason to move on, another idea, another campaign, another battle. But in due course it will be with another president.
McGuire has never been far from controversy throughout his tenure, especially given his prominent role in the media.
McGuire was loudly urged to step down after an off-air gaffe in 2013 when he suggested promoting Sydney’s indigenous star Adam Goodes for the musical King Kong.
The comments came just days after Goodes was racially abused by a Collingwood fan in a match.
McGuire managed to weather any controversy and he will seek to end his term at a high point in 2021.
