On a day of few shocks in the FA Cup second round, most of the drama was at Mazuma Stadium, from League Two Morecambe a goal down came to Solihull Moors of the National League in overtime to beat 4-2.
Kyle Hudlin’s first Solihull goal brought the Midlanders in the 19th. Minute lead, an advantage they had until the break.
The Shrimps had striker Cole Stockton to thank for turning the game around by scoring two goals in six minutes in the second half. There was another twist when old Morecambe boy Jordan Cranston equalized to force extra time, but Stockton was involved in the home team’s extra time strike – from substitute John O’Sullivan and an own goal from Mitch Hancox – which his team led into overtime third round for the first time in 18 years.
Extra time was needed at Jonny-Rocks Stadium, where hosts Cheltenham were grateful for George Lloyd’s brave header as they beat Crewe 2-1. West Brom loanee Finn Azaz had given the Robins the lead in the second minute, but Chris Porter’s leveler forced overtime just past the hour.
It was a lot quieter for the home team at Fratton Park, where Portsmouth beat National League King’s Lynn 6-1. Rasmus Nicolaisen, the defender on loan from Danish champions FC Midtjylland, led the League One team after two minutes. Additional goals from Tom Naylor, Sean Raggett and Marcus Harness kept the hosts out of sight at the time of Dayle Southwell’s tie, goal back for King’s Lynn. Ellis Harrison and Jordy Hiwula were set to score two more goals for Pompey before the full-time whistle.
League One Blackpool has made Harrogate equally easy from the lower tier. It took until age 50. Minute until the Tangerines achieved the breakthrough in the CNG stadium. Mark Beck went into his own net, but more hits from Grant Ward, Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel and Daniel Kemp pushed Blackpool into the third round. Harrogate suffered another blow when Kevin Lokko saw red late.
Exeter were the only team to beat their opponents from a higher league and win 3-2 in League One Gillingham. Joel Randall scored twice in five minutes to give the Greeks some breath after Nicky Law paved Vadaine Oliver’s opener for the Gills.
Dominic Samuel pulled one back for Gillingham with ten minutes from time, but Exeter held out to advance to the next round and Randall even hit the post trying to find his hat trick. The win for Matt Taylor’s team was only the third away win in the FA Cup in 25 attempts.
Second division leaders Newport County put in a strong performance to beat ten-man Salford. Brandon Thomas-Asante was sent off shortly after the break for a dangerous challenge against Newport keeper Tom King, and the Exiles took advantage. Jamie Proctor, Padraig Amond and Saikou Janneh all scored a goal for the hosts to knock out Richie Wellens’ side.
Plymouth also secured a straight through to the third round with goals from Luke Jephcott and Ben Reeves enough to beat fellow League One colleagues Lincoln at Home Park.
In the All League Two battle between Bradford City and Oldham, it was Harry Kewell’s Latics who came out on top, despite falling behind early.
Clayton Donaldson had the Bantams lead after finishing 11th. Minute by Oldham keeper Ian Lawlor had been overthrown. Oldham leveled seven minutes later when Conor McAleny stepped in from the left and shot a shot into the far corner from 20 yards. Danny Rowe scored a stellar winner, giving Oldham their third away win in eight days, the sixth in their last seven games.
