Carlos Sainz Jr. has confirmed that Ferrari is pushing to be allowed to take part in Formula 1 young driver testing after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It is crucial that the current McLaren driver is contractually free and can therefore carry out the test if Ferrari receives permission from the FIA to participate.

Lobbying from Renault led the FIA to open the one-day test for Fernando Alonso to run a few miles in the Enstone team’s 2020 car, while Sebastien Buemi is set to drive for Red Bull and Robert Kubica for Alfa Romeo.

So far, drivers who have driven in 2020 have been excluded from the day, but Sainz made it clear that Ferrari hopes he can make an early debut for the team and bring priceless miles into the winter.

Teams are allowed to drive two cars in the test, and Ferrari has already announced that one will be driven by Robert Shwartzman and one by Antonio Fuoco.

In the meantime, two other young Ferrari drivers will also be busy, with Mick Schumacher in Haas and Callum Ilott in Alfa Romeo.

Fuoco’s run is mostly about giving the Maranello simulator driver a chance to get acquainted with the real car and the team would clearly be willing to sacrifice their chance to allow Sainz to participate, while showing their dedication for young drivers uphold via Shwartzman.

« I think it’s no secret, especially now that the hand has been opened a bit by the FIA for riders who are not novices or young riders to test, I don’t see why the FIA doesn’t would open the hand a bit to all drivers.

« I think Callum (above), Mick and Robert Shwartzman, I think they will still be testing. So if I jump in a Ferrari I’m not going to allow them to test, they will. « still test.

« I think Ferrari is one of the teams that is currently promoting young drivers the most.

« I don’t know what’s going to happen to be honest, I don’t know what the FIA decision is, but you can say I’ll try to be there as much as possible. «

To clarify what process is underway, he said, « I’m not going to say what we’re going to do.

« But I can tell you that I am very willing to take this Abu Dhabi test, especially because my contract allows me. «

McLaren is not taking part in the test, but future driver Daniel Ricciardo says participating was never an option as he is still under contract with Renault.

« It was always from 2021 onwards, so I don’t really feel like I lost personally because it wasn’t anything I ever expected.

« He’s pretty handsome and pretty young – so I think with the naked eye he’ll surely come around as a young driver! »
