A fifth checkpoint will be added on the New South Wales border after more than 300 vehicles have been re-introduced since border restrictions from Queensland.

The restricted access point on Nerang-Murwillumbah Road will be open from Saturday between 8am. 00 and 16. Operating midnight Queensland time.

The electronic gates are closed to vehicles outside of these times, with the exception of the emergency services.

Greater Sydney was declared a hotspot after two community broadcast clusters grew on the beaches in the inner west and north of the city.

Queensland has closed its border with Greater Sydney. Those who enter must undergo hotel quarantine.

Queenslanders returning from a hotspot in Sydney had to fly to the state and pay for hotel quarantine.

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler said a fourth checkpoint, which opened around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday in Kirra, and the new Nerange-Murwillumbah Road checkpoint would ease traffic congestion.

« It was a good result for the local community as these local roads have been a bit congested for the past 10 days so it should get easier, » he said.

« Up to this morning we have shot 375 vehicles with 840 people that came directly from a hotspot in the greater Sydney area …. or on many occasions they just haven’t proven to our satisfaction that they weren’t there, ”he said.

“People tell us stories about being out of the Sydney area. If the police question them, they can evade their answers and are unable to provide receipts.

Chief Superintendent Wheeler said emergency vehicles and personnel had 24/7 access through the electronic gates on Nerang-Murwillumbah Road and Tomewin Mountain Road.

“We have an extremely high volume of traffic. . . There will be times when emergency services get stuck in traffic and that’s not unusual, ”he said.
