Carlos Ghosn fled Japan in late 2019 when he was charged with financial inappropriateness. His escape was the stuff of robbery movies and airport thrillers, which made the news that he hired Mike Ovitz as his agent earlier this year less of a surprise. Ghosn currently lives in Lebanon, where he cannot be extradited to Japan. Unfortunately, the people who helped him escape are not in a comparable position. A new article in the Wall Street Journal examines the current situation of Michael and Peter Taylor. Michael is a former Green Beret; Peter is his son. Both are currently detained in the United States, awaiting extradition to Japan to help Ghosn escape. Or, as the authors Mark Maremont and Nick Kostov put it: “The multimillionaire Auto Executive and the former soldier have swapped places. « Complicating matters are the elderly Taylor’s health problems: He is missing part of a lung as a result of previous surgery, placing him at a higher risk for COVID-19. According to the article, the Taylor family’s legal strategy includes appeals to the Trump administration. Maremont and Kostov note that their attorneys include Ty Cobb and Abbe Lowell, both of whom have ties to the Trump family; You also appealed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The elderly Taylor has a specialty at filtering people out of dangerous situations, including rescuing a New York Times reporter from the Taliban. But he also had legal troubles, including a moment in 2012 when, according to the article, he and others had rigged a Pentagon contract won by his security firm and then attempted to bribe an FBI agent. The Taylors claim they tried to help a man who was wrongly imprisoned. The article also points out that they are not the only people involved in Ghosn’s escape who are bringing charges. His departure from Japan may have been sudden, but the effects are still being felt.
