West Ham United manager David Moyes has questioned the Premier League’s decision to postpone three games last month because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The matches between Newcastle and Aston Villa, Everton v Manchester City and Tottenham v Fulham were canceled in December following the outbreak of Covid-19 on the squads of some of the teams involved.

Each game is judged individually, with the Premier League making the final decision on whether a game should take place.

There are no rules directly addressing the postponement of matches due to illness among players and club staff, although the 2020-21 Premier League Manual states that « no permission will be given to postpone a league match if the club making the application has 14 or more players. « Players listed on the squad list are available. « 

Moyes has therefore questioned whether it was right that the three games were postponed during the crowded holiday season, especially since he and two of his West Ham players – Issa Diop and Josh Cullen – tested positive in September, but none of which games have been postponed.

« We don’t understand or complain about the games, because those are the pairings. They didn’t abandon the games when me and two players got Covid, but they have now decided it is time to do that, « Moyes said at a press conference ahead of West Ham’s Premier League clash with Everton.

« I thought you had to have 14 players and the original point was saying you would go to your academy and get players so I don’t know if those rules have changed now. « 

Moyes, Diop and Cullen – the latter has since left West Ham to join the Belgian club Anderlecht – were welcomed shortly before their Carabao Cup game against Hull City on March 22nd. Tested positive for coronavirus September.

The players had been named on the starting grid for the game, while Moyes was also at the London stadium before the game when all three men were given their results. All three immediately left the stadium to self-isolate and there were no further positive tests.

West Ham will face Everton in the first Premier League game in 2021 on New Years Day. The Toffees have not played since Boxing Day after their game against City was abandoned, while the Hammers have played on Jan.. December against Southampton. The game ends with 0-0.
