Former soccer stars and best friends Billy Bownless and Garry Lyon buried the hatchet with the former’s wife five years after he fled.
The duo were partners for decades before Lyon met Nicky and he then moved into the Brownless family home where their children lived.
Public rainfall dominated the Melbourne media, but on Friday the old friends broke bread over Christmas dinner at the family home in rural Victoria.
Brownless’ eldest daughter Lucy uploaded photos of the day to social media. Footy fans were thrilled to see the old friends together again.
On Sam Newman’s podcast earlier this year, Brownless said everyone was trying to make the most of a difficult situation.
« You know I’m going to ask you this – people want to know how you and Garry Lyon are doing, » Newman asked.
« At the time, of course, you’re going through all of the different emotions, » Brownless said. « Why me? » And of course a little hatred.
« But now mate, it’s been four or five years, I stopped by and everyone is in a good place to be honest. Garry and Nicky are – that’s fine – and the kids (too).
« That was the other big problem (at the time). The young Maxy was about 10 years old, Oscar was about 14 years old, the girls (Lucy and Ruby) were 16, 17 years old.
« It was so public that it was the biggest problem. It was so public. On TV, in the newspapers, front page of Geelong Addy.
« It was hard back then because it was so public. I would go to a coffee shop and I would swear everyone was looking at me and talking about it and it wasn’t them. ”
Brownless admitted that his relationship with Lyon would never be the same but said that despite the first few years, they were not doing well.
« People have to take sides, your friends, your in-laws, your really close friends, » he said.
« There are no problems, we’re in a good room, he’s in a good room, Nicky is, the kids are and me too.
Brownless and Nicky were married for nearly 20 years but were reportedly estranged as Lyon’s relationship with her developed.
