UGA defeated Missouri on Saturday, December at 49:14. 12 in his last regular season game of the year. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 28-0 in the second half, while JT Daniels linked up with George Pickens for two touchdowns. Pickens finished with five receptions for 126 yards.
Georgia Football was entering the fifth year of the Kirby Smart era and looking to return to the top of the SEC after two consecutive appearances in the SEC championship game. UGA ended its 2019 season with a Sugar Bowl win over Baylor and a 12-2 win. It was the Bulldogs’ second consecutive appearance in the Sugar Bowl, holding the Bears back this time after running close to Texas a year earlier.
The Bulldogs took the lead 12-2 last year and lost to LSU in the SEC Championship Game before beating Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.
Three-year-old quarterback Jake Fromm is gone, as is his dynamic teammate D’Andre Swift. Replacing both in addition to three offensive linemen is no easy task. Stetson Bennett is the only quarterback on the roster who has previously played for the Bulldogs. He has attempted 27 passes in five games to relieve Fromm over the past year. Southern California transfer JT Daniels could also be an option sometime this season. Those who start at the end could take on a lot of offensive responsibility and not have much time to find their way around Georgia’s system. Fortunately, top wide receiver George Pickens is back after leading the Bulldogs with 727 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman.
But again, defense is the name of the game in Athens. Kirby Smart has eight players back who started at least eight games in 2019. Inside linebacker Monty Rice has 38 career appearances in Georgia and will start the year on the preseason watchlist for the Butkus Award – bestowed to the best linebacker in college football. Rice led the UGA with 89 tackles last season, in addition to three TFL and three pass separations, and earned him the « Second Team All-SEC » award a year ago.
Experience is an issue in Georgia’s defense and no bulldog has more of it on this side of the ball than security Richard LeCounte, as the senior has started all but one game over the past two seasons. LeCounte finished his junior campaign with 61 tackles and led the Bulldogs in interceptions (4), fumble recovery (3) and part of team leadership with two forced fumbles. Check most defensive preseason watchlists and you will find LeCounte’s name. He made the first cut for the Bednarik, Thorpe and Nagurski Awards.
UGA is losing a number of stars, from QB Jake Fromm and RB D’Andre Swift to its seasoned offensive linemen. But when it comes to talent, Georgia will again be under Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State. The Bulldogs received a boost when Wake Forest Transfer QB Jamie Newman picked UGA. The Dawgs will again have one of the best defenses in the country.
The era of college football playoffs begins its seventh season in the 2020-21 season. LSU won a national championship on its first appearance, while Alabama was not among the four teams selected for the first time in CFP history. Could this be the start of a new era in the SEC?
Whether LSU, Alabama, or another SEC representative among the top four teams, here are the dates and locations for the 2020 College Football Playoffs semifinals and the CFP National Championship.
The CFP semi-finals are scheduled for January. 1, 2021. One of the semi-finals is the Rose Bowl at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. The other semi-final is the Sugar Bowl in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
The national championship of the GFP is a little later in 2021. The two winners of the semi-finals will meet in Miami on the second Monday in January. 11, 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium
