World News – AU – How The Crown coped with Diana’s style evolution

Amy Roberts has the enviable job of dressing up the characters for the Netflix hit series - Just don't tell her.

Amy Roberts has the seemingly enviable mission of dressing up the characters for the Netflix song series Just don’t tell her that

Actress Emma Corinne as Diana on her wedding day Fashionista Amy Roberts spoke to David Emmanuel in depth about the original sketches and designs of Diana’s wedding dress

“There is DNA for the Crown World that took a while to understand,” says fashion designer Amy Roberts – and promptly pushed the idea that making the clothes for the show would be a fairy tale fulfilled

“I tell people this with a laugh but, honestly, I spent the first three months at work thinking,“ How can I get out of this? “She told Life & Leisure over the phone from London

Instead like Diana Spencer, it was premiered in the fourth season of the entire Netflix show starting Sunday. It didn’t take long for the newest member of « The Company » (to which the royals in the Windsor family are known) realized she was far away Just about its depth

Crown stylist Amy Roberts: « What no one can totally tell you, is the enormity of the job »

She took on the role of the costume designer in the third season of the hit show, and is said to be the most expensive series produced by the Live Broadcast Service, the first season alone, which premiered four years ago this month, costing more than $ 130 million ($ 181 million).

“I didn’t realize how enormous that was,” she says. “He’s more than just a fashion designer, somehow I knew I could do this part of him, but what I didn’t expect, and what no one can tell you completely, is the enormity of the job and its description. One of them is a giant, a huge monster that keeps progressing and has no end, and this is what it looks like. ”

The schedule was agonizing, often with shots in multiple locations on the same day « You could have one in a big house in Hampshire and another shooting Highland Games in Scotland »

Roberts, who worked primarily in theater, won an Emmy this year for her work on the third season of The Crown, having previously been nominated in 2011 for Upstairs, Downstairs Revived on BBC.

Season 4 marks Emma Corin’s debut as Diana Spencer, and later Princess of Wales, as well as Gillian Anderson in an inspiring role as newly elected Margaret Thatcher

« There are a lot of icons in Diana’s clothes, » Roberts says. « She has the clearest journey meeting a cute girl, not particularly bright, very nice, works in a kindergarten, lives in an apartment with her friends, a normal girl »

When she got engaged to the Prince of Wales, Spencer was 19 years old, and according to Roberts, « she wasn’t too elegant »

Once you’ve immersed yourself in the characters, you can wear them without a reference, movie, or photo

“She’s wearing chubby sweaters and ripped shoes – she’s all low-grade Sloan Ranger and then arrives she’s wearing palace party dresses, where she meets all these royals, these somewhat terrifying people who make you feel sick as she looks like a little kid dressed in Her mother’s clothes «

Interspersed with these awkward formal encounters in inappropriate attire, Spencer performs ballet and roller skates across Buckingham Palace with her Walkman, dressed in clothes that reflect her relative ease

Of course, one of Princess Diana’s most memorable fashion moments in Princess Diana’s early 1980s journey from childhood to Royal Glamazon School is her wedding to The Prince of Wales – and her dress created by English designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel

« Of course it has to be the dress, because everyone knows it well, » says Roberts of Corinne’s wedding dress. But then I thought, « Well, close your eyes and draw them and what do you think about the big sleeves, the big skirt, the long, long, and long train, and their proportions. » Like Disney?

« And this is what I had to do. I don’t find it exciting or necessary to have that pearl on the body in just the right place. I just want to give you a brushstroke impression of the dress.

By the season’s end, Roberts says, Princess Diana had gone from « ghost wood to daring fighter. » Launched from the palace, from the clutches of the Wicked Witch

I started wearing more cool clothes, « Everything becomes a new set of armor, » says Roberts.

Margaret Thatcher, who became Prime Minister in 1979, when Season 4 began, says it was a different dress-up challenge « She’s started eating oatmeal completely, in oatmeal suits, somehow more discreet but when she gets to the salad, she sees her muscles more »

Roberts and her team dressed Anderson’s Thatcher in « carefully planned feminine clothing » early in the season, and later, in skirt suits that matched her strong sense of strength.

« Suits expand, take up more space, » she says, « There is real progress for them. »

Not everything Roberts made for show came on screen, she says, including a collection of « The Most Beautiful ’80s Ski Wear »

“We designed and built them and were never used You just have to go along with the flow and hand it over to the editor, even if you think, ‘Oh my God, we could have saved a little bit of money there!’

As the show recreates real events, Roberts says there is more room for costume making for what she calls « watershed moments » than the show, where the characters are at home

“Once you are immersed in the characters, you can wear them without a reference, movie, or picture as you know, if you are the Queen and you will not see anyone all day, you are just sitting at your office and answering the messages, then you will probably be in a beautiful blouse and skirt.
