Then there is the question of academics in Britain, some of whom are some of the most sensitive subjects in our universities.

In recent years, we have come to understand that China is systematically targeting and stealing academic technology.

Most disturbing is the discovery that this scourge extends to our own Foreign Office.

Applicants to the FO are rightly among the best screened in the government. The staff of our consulates and embassies will see and discuss state affairs.

You are rightly considered one of the most useful potential « assets » by foreign intelligence agencies. Even the anodyne information can have implications for national security.

I believe the government must now try to expel and remove all Communist Party members from our consulates in China. You can serve the UK or the CCP. You can’t do both.

We did not realize that the core of the Chinese system is a system of ideas and values ​​that not only contradicts ours, but tries to overcome it. The interests of the Communist Party come first.

It’s not that China tried to hide this reality, but that we in the free world have been willing to turn a blind eye for so long.
