New Yorker Robin Frohardt was so horrified to see that her purchase was mummified in plastic that she felt compelled to act.
In a shop in her hometown, she observed a seller’s bag and double-bagged groceries that were already in one bag.
These were the origins of The Plastic Bag Store, one of the centerpieces of the Adelaide Festival 2021 program.
The « business » will be opened during the festival from 26. February to 14. March set up in the former Harris Scarfe department store in Rundle Mall.
Its products are similar to everyday items – sundaes of ice cream, mixed salads, and fruits and vegetables – except that they are all made from plastic bags.
There are pizzas with « hot melt bags in your mouth in minutes » and juice-like cartons with orange plastic bags that « contain only the best orange plastic bags from Florida that are delivered to you with love ». .
« I thought I was building a grocery store that was all made up of plastic bags and packaging to highlight the ridiculousness and absurdity of using and throwing away packaging, » Frohardt said.
The show, which also includes a movie and a tour of the store, had its own dramas.
It was slated to open in Times Square, Manhattan earlier this year, before the COVID-19 crisis had a major impact and had a personal impact on the Brooklyn-based artist.
« Our show was supposed to open in March and of course we were only closed three days earlier, » she admitted.
Now she and five others are preparing to fly to Adelaide in February, where they are going through the mandatory two-week quarantine before setting up The Plastic Bag Store.
« You seem to be miles ahead of us in many ways, » she said.
« I think there is a better understanding of the problems of single-use packaging. I think it’s going to take a while here [in America]. . «
Frohardt came from the fields of theater and puppetry and in recent years has only focused on garbage and garbage.
« I’m desperate, and maybe this is my coping mechanism to try to tell an interesting story and make people laugh as a new way of thinking about things – thinking about those things that sometimes feel overwhelming Somehow block them out and you feel too sad to confront them, « she said.
While the American coronavirus cases are still on the up and New York is bunkering again, Frohardt is looking forward to escaping her disused arts sector and coming to Australia.
All rubbish used in The Plastic Bag Store is not sourced locally – it was found in the streets and bins of New York City.
