It’s considered one of the biggest debates among Lord of the Rings fans: Who can grow a beard? Well, J. . R.. . R.. . Tolkien himself has the answer in a previously unpublished essay that expands the world of Middle-earth and is part of a new collection of works due out next year.

The Guardian reports that HarperCollins is preparing to publish a new collection of previously unpublished Tolkien essays, The Nature of Middle-Earth, edited by Tolkien expert and Elvish Linguistic Fellowship director Carl F.. Hostetter. The release was approved by the Tolkien Estate, who took over the Tolkien collection after its former caretaker Christopher Tolkien, who passed away earlier this year, retired.

This collection of writings written later in Tolkien’s life explores the world of Middle-earth and reveals some of its secrets. Topics include: immortality and reincarnation of the elves, the geography of the kingdom of Gondor, and the longstanding question of who can grow a beard in Middle-earth. HarperCollins’ deputy publishing director Chris Smith called the collection a « treasure trove » for Tolkien fans and scholars.

« For him, Middle-earth was part of a whole world that needed exploration, » said Smith. “The writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys he took to better understand his unique creation. ”

The nature of Middle-earth comes when Tolkien’s world awaits another resurgence. Amazon Studios is working on a new Lord of the Rings series that experienced production delays due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The nature of Middle-earth should come out in summer 2021.
