Someone once said that you should never trust a man with two first names, but that someone wasn’t Sixer’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Five minutes before the end, you looked at the square and saw a Sixers lineup that included Isaiah Joe, Dakota Mathias, and Terrance Ferguson. A few minutes later the buzzer rang. Another submarine was stuck in his shirt. Paul Reed joined the party.

It was Monday night and the Hornets were in town and things were going as you expected. By the end of the trial, Dwight Howard had his shirt off, Joel Embiid was smiling in his warm-ups, and the end of the Sixers’ course looked like the end of an AAU tournament when the last few seconds had passed in a 118-101 win.

There isn’t much to say on this subject other than keeping all the vibes good for these Sixers. It seems like they offer a new crease with every game that makes you wonder how high their potential might be. On Monday night, the featured presentations were some skills that their respective players’ headlines didn’t exactly master.

Let’s start with Joel Embiid, because that’s where it always starts. Only this time it began with his death. On a night when the Hornets used various defensive looks to keep Embiid off the edge, the tall man responded with a shrug and a leap.

« He really used himself as a points center on the block, » said teammate Tobias Harris, who celebrated his award as Player of the Week at the Eastern Conference with a 22-point outing.

Embiid was just that against the Hornets when he was eliminated from doubles and triples faster than the defense could reset. He finished with four assists and could have had a few more if the shots had been fired.

As the Sixers move through an important off-season, we give you the news and analysis to keep you updated on the weekly events.

« I think it’s more that I rekindled myself with the love of passing, » said Embiid, who only tried 10 shots and finished with 14 points. “I may not get a lot of templates, but the whole goal is to keep someone else open. ”

In fact, Embiid’s improvement isn’t shown in the raw box rating. On the way to Monday night he was an average of 2. 8 assists per game, slightly below his career average. Box scores, however, do not measure reaction time, judicial view, command and control, or the first pass of a sequence that eventually results in an open shooter.

Speaking of shooters, the Sixers look like they’ve got what it takes in their Kentucky rookie point guard. When Tyrese Maxey fell into the Sixers’ lap at the end of the first round, it was assumed that there were questions about his shooting. However, this type of scouting report does not match what we saw in seven games. Although Maxey started on Monday with just a three-point in seven tries, he was sure to see the role with a natural rhythm, quick shutter release, and gentle touch. Against the hornets, he dropped two shots from behind the bow, one of them by quickly catching and releasing a feed from Ben Simmons.

« There’s this story out there that says he got into the draft because people didn’t think he could shoot, » Rivers said. « I haven’t seen a tidbit of it yet. ”

What he saw is a team that has taken his messages and become one hell of a fun team to watch. At 7:37 in the second quarter, the Sixers were down five. A few minutes later, they were ten on their way to a 27-7 run to end the first half. It started at the defensive end of the course, like this season, with Embiid serving as a seven-foot piece of kryptonite stationed around the gate. Simmons was spectacular again, Danny Green was solid again and the Sixers defended like a special kind of unit.

The real test begins Thursday with a trip to Brooklyn, where five games will be played against four of the league’s more dynamic teams. It would be advisable to have full judgments for a few weeks.

Even so, the Sixers are doing business the way they should, and that matters a lot in a season like this. 6-1, they have their best start in seven games since the 2000-01 season, when Allen Iverson’s group won seven straight wins en route to their NBA finals. It’s far too early to be able to say for sure how close these Sixers are to this level. But they play a fun kind of basketball.

The Sixers won. They looked good doing it. Rinse, repeat and enjoy what you see from this team.
