Preview: The West Indies enjoyed the freedom to go covid-free New Zealand on the eve of Wednesday’s first test in Hamilton, but said the pressure should be fully focused on once the game starts.

It has been months since both sides played red ball cricket, which left the potential for rust in the New Zealand Test against India in February. The West Indies only contested three Tests against England in July.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder said his test team for Thursday’s opening game bears little resemblance to the Twenty20 side, who were whipped 2-0 by New Zealand last week, and are on the side, which had come under pressure from 240 runs in their last game, has been greatly improved on the longest format in Hamilton three years ago.

« We’ve had some good successes from then to now, so I think it’s important for us to just keep building as a team, » said Holder when the West Indies were about 15 yards from a very green test on Tuesday -Wicket trained away.

« We have our plans and we just have to carry them out. Where we fell in the past is execution. «

The tourists enjoyed being able to finally escape the bubble life that many of them had for the past five months in England and then in Dubai, where the Indian Premier League was played, in empty stadiums because of the pandemic.

« It’s like running a child into a playground for the first time, » said Holder when describing getting out in New Zealand and playing cricket in front of large crowds.

« It’s refreshing. I had the opportunity to play golf, I had the opportunity to sit in a restaurant that I haven’t done in four or five months so I’m a bit chilled out and relaxed. «

New Zealand has a chance to meddle in the World Testing Championship final if it wins the two Tests against the West Indies and the following two against Pakistan.

But Captain Kane Williamson didn’t look that far ahead as he wrestled with Twenty20 Cricket for the past few months to get back into test mode after a diet.

« You are trying to go back to previous experiences and narrow things down with your game. Obviously, the red ball game is very different from the white ball format and undoubtedly has its challenges, « he said.

« It is able to get rid of this to some extent and focus on what gives you the best chance of playing competitively and your best test cricket instead of outdoing yourself and above thinking about where you might end up. « on ladders. «

Neither team was ready to name their starting XI before seeing the condition of the field on Thursday morning, but Williamson confirmed wicketkeeper BJ Watling would not play due to a thigh strain.

He has been replaced by Will Young, who will be eye-catching on his long-awaited test debut. The reigning opener Tom Blundell has declined the order to take over the retention requirements.

The unfortunate boy was named for his debut against Bangladesh last year before the test was canceled after the Christchurch Mosque attacks.

Three months later, he missed the World Cup squad after suffering a shoulder injury at training camp.

Both teams confirmed on the eve of the test that they would continue to use the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as they did prior to the start of the Twenty20 Games last week.
