The Danish Bond star Mikkelsen takes on the role of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the third Harry Potter prequel
Warner Bros Pictures has confirmed that James Bond star Mads Mikkelsen will take on the role of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald from Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts’ third film.
Depp resigned from the role after losing his high profile libel case against the Sun newspaper over an article calling him a « bully ». . Earlier reports suggested that Mikkelsen was director David Yates’ preferred choice to replace Depp and was « in talks » to play Grindelwald.
Danish actor Mikkelsen, 55, was best known as the seedy banker Le Chiffre to Daniel Craig in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale. He also played Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the television series Hannibal.
In the Harry Potter universe, Grindelwald is an immensely powerful, evil wizard who is considered the second greatest after Voldemort.
Depp, 57, said he was asked by Warner Bros to quit the franchise following his legal defeat. He was denied permission to appeal the verdict, but received by Jan.. December the opportunity to turn directly to the court of appeal.
Fantastic Beasts 3 was produced in the UK, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore. The film is due to be released on Jan.. July 2022.
