. . Max Holloway won't be playing sparring for the foreseeable future after opening his eyes to the odds during his last fight.

The COVID-19 pandemic meant Max Holloway had a less ideal training camp for his rematch with Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 251 in July. One advantage, however, was that it opened Holloway’s eyes to sparring.

Because of the Hawaii bans, Holloway had no training partners and had to speak to his coaches about Zoom. Most importantly, for the first time, he didn’t save on what he saw as the main part of a training camp.

Of course, it didn’t seem to affect him during the fight as while he was losing a close decision he did much better than the first fight, with many observers believing he had done enough to win.

And before his upcoming fight with Calvin Kattar on Nov.. On January 1st, Holloway plans not to fight again just because he suffers far fewer injuries in one fight.

« I really loved it, like the last stock I didn’t save, » Holloway told ESPN. “It opened my eyes. I used to get injured sparring a lot before the fights and I felt great going into that fight without sparring.

“… sparring is like an ego journey. I understand that you have to do something, but you can find different ways to get around and get it done. … During the entire training camp, it helped a lot to be clear about our priorities. I have to take some things out, I have to add a little more things. It just changed the recipe and the last one I thought went pretty well and we’re kind of sticking to it and we’ll see how this goes. ”

Holloway is known for handing out plenty of damage and getting his fair share of it.

And most importantly, it looks like Holloway won’t be sparring for the foreseeable future as he wants to avoid further long-term damage to his head.

« No, save the brain, » he added when asked if he would save for this camp. “I want to be the kind of guy who’s already tough in third grade so I can only imagine getting hit in the head and trying to help Mini Blessed. ”
