Melbourne cafe owner was forced to hire security guards after fears vandals could damage his business

Moorabbin’s Arcobar Cafe erected a sign telling people they could expect an extra dollar on their bill if they supported Victoria’s premier Daniel Andrews

Owner Franz Madlener insisted the sign was not meant to be political and instead focused on his dislike of the state government telling small businesses how to operate during the pandemic

Franz told 7News: « Customers come every day and tell us how lucky we are to be able to open. They ask us’ aren’t you grateful? » And the answer is no

« The first thought of the morning and the last of the night is about the lockdown It doesn’t lead to healthy jokes, it’s vicious »

But since the story aired yesterday, he has been the target of ill-treatment and threats of violence

Madlener told The Today Show that Victoria Police visited him and ‘strongly encouraged’ him to remove the sign

Franz said he hired security guards to take care of the cafe during the night because he feared people would throw stones out of windows

He added that the sign had been up for three weeks and that around 30 people had thrown a dollar into the jar without complaint, but the fury really escalated after a photo of the sign ‘ ironic  » has gone viral on social media

« In the last 24 hours I guess since this sign went viral the level of abuse, vile anger and personal attacks on the company, me and the staff yesterday was completely overblown « he told Channel 9

« If the police asked you to remove the sign, of course My main concern is for our staff, to keep the staff safe We don’t want people to come and use this to create more anger against the staff

« Until now we have fought against the lockdown and now we are fighting these absolute extremists, full of absolute hatred towards the company »

He said the sign was purely designed to be a ‘light protest’ against lockdown restrictions that have kept small businesses like Franz closed

Franz hopes the vitriol against him and his coffee calms down and hopes that he can stop worrying about the case
