The Department of Mining, Industry, Regulation and Safety confirmed that a miner was fatally injured at Westgold Resources’ Big Bell site in the Midwestern state on Tuesday.

Andrew Chaplyn, director of safety for DMIRS mines, said the worker was flown to Perth but died in the hospital.

« Mine safety inspectors are on their way to Big Bell to visit the scene, » he said.

In a statement to the market shortly after lunch, Westgold Company Secretary Lisa Smith said there was an incident at the mine in which an employee was involved in underground transportation activities.

Mining and processing activities at Westgold’s other cue operations as well as at Meekathara and Fortnum operations will continue.

The incident brings the death toll at mining sites in WA to three this year after Perth’s father Michael Johnson was killed when his sucker was killed in the Saracen Dervish mine near Kalgoorlie during the July 64-year-old Howard Prosser fell from a fall and was killed in a telescopic handler accident in January at the Roy Hill iron ore mine in the Pilbara.

The Big Bell mine was abandoned in 2003 and was inactive and flooded until three years ago when Westgold began draining it and preparing it for mining to restart.
