More than 100 nurses and midwives have left Blacktown Hospital in Western Sydney and will not return to work the next 24 hours.
The hospital has been in crisis since last week when 20 senior obstetricians threatened to be discharged after four newborns died within 18 months.
The nurses and midwives met today with the hospital administration and made a number of offers, including a review of the recruitment form..
But the staff rejected the hospital’s offers and began an industrial strike, and many protested in front of the hospital.
The Association of Nurses and Midwives of New South Wales said staff felt unsupported and did not trust management to follow up on their offers.
The public can still receive care in the hospital as enough employees work in the departments to continue working.
Last week, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazard requested a full hospital review after raising a number of issues with him, including lack of access to operating rooms for cesarean deliveries.
Shortage of staff at the hospital, one of the busiest in Sydney, has also been reported as a major problem.
The Australian Medical Association in New South Wales (AMA) President Daniel McMullen previously said a « systemic change » is needed in the hospital.
“Fortunately, today we are seeing more procedures on the ground but the problem has been known for some time, and there has been a significant increase in the number of births over the past few years at Blacktown Hospital and they really need some methodological change and more resources.. Dr. McMullen said last week.
“There is a broader problem with providing resources, but in general the women were safe and well taken care of, we are only trying to make improvements on the path.
