World News – AU – More than 200 complaints about « Deepfake » queen’s speech

. .

More than 200 complaints have been filed about a « deepfake » version of the Queen’s speech that aired on Christmas Day.

The alternate Christmas message shown on Channel 4 saw a digitally rendered version of the British monarch speaking to the nation in what had been billed as a warning of misinformation and false news.

The speech included jokes about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s move to the United States, as well as a reference to the Duke of York scandal and his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

They added, « We are evaluating these complaints against our broadcasting rules but have yet to decide whether or not to conduct an investigation. «

In the speech, the Queen’s digital version also performed a TikTok dance routine, showing her love of « Netflix and Phil » with the Duke of Edinburgh.

Channel 4’s alternate Christmas message aired over the BBC’s broadcast of the Queen’s official annual television news to the nation.

The Channel 4 program director claimed the alternate message was intended to serve as a « powerful reminder » of misinformation.

« Deepfake technology is the frightening new frontier in the battle between misinformation and truth, » said Ian Katz.

He added, “This year’s alternative Christmas address, apparently held by one of the country’s most famous and trusted personalities, is a powerful reminder that we can no longer trust our own eyes. ”
