The AdAmAn Club turns 99 in December. Make the trek to Pikes Peak. 31 for New Years fireworks. Here’s what to expect at the fireworks show when we ring the doorbell around Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region in 2021.

– Ten AdAmAn members and guests are expected to climb the Barr Trail, the usual number closer to 30. They also start a day after the start of the trip. « It’s definitely been a strange year, but that should go without saying, » said Don Sanborn, a long-time member who plans to drive instead of hiking.

– Traditionally, the famous brotherhood of seasoned nature lovers makes their way to the Barr Trail in December. 30 and stays the night at Barr Camp. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, plans are made to skip camp and attempt the 13-mile trail to the summit in a wintry burst. Ideally, you should arrive several hours before the midnight fireworks show.

– If everything goes according to plan, the trail roster will meet another crew of 10 who are on the other side of Pikes Peak on the highway from Glen Cove near 11. Ascends 400 feet. It is believed that the split arrangement – again to keep the club at a distance – marks a first in AdAmAn’s history.

– The AdAmAn Club has long honored its founders with five colorful explosions at 9 p.m.. m. To celebrate Colorado Springs’ 200th anniversary in 2021, the group will launch 150 grenades at 9 p.m.. m. – on par with the ultimate show at midnight.

– The hike along the Pikes Peak Highway is different, but not new. Due to avalanche threats along the Barr Trail, the club received permission to use the road in 2006. Freeway staff could be on standby « if we need to help punch a hole or something, » said Jack Glavan, manager of the Colorado Springs company that operates the freeway. Plans are considered tentative until there are COVID restrictions and whatever the whims of Mother Nature.

– In 2010, a wild blizzard forced AdAmAn hikers to turn around. The club claims this has been the only time the fireworks have been abandoned since 1922, when Fred Barr and four other men climbed Pikes Peak and rang the bell in the New Year by launching 175 pound rockets and flares for all to see.

– The 150. Birthday is an occasion that the permanent community of the city would not want to miss. It’s about « showing perseverance through adversity, » said Sanborn. « A good thing to think about with the whole COVID thing. « 

For better or for worse, the pandemic gave many of us more opportunities to achieve our outdoor goals. We deleted a lot from our bucket lists in 2020. Yet Colorado keeps waving. For your consideration this year:
