World News – AU – NRL Grand Final: Cameron Smith says he would sign with Titans, not Broncos, in ‘alternate universe’

It was a tongue-in-cheek response to a question in a light interview - but the fact that the words came out of Cameron Smith's mouth won't do much to quell speculation about his future.

It was an ironic response to a question in a light interview – but the fact that the words got out of Cameron Smith’s Mouth won’t do much to quell speculation about his future.

During an appearance on The Matty Johns Family podcast this week, the Melbourne Storm skipper was asked if in another universe he would be most likely to play for the Brisbane Broncos or the Gold Coast Titans.

After a brief pause and more laughter, Smith gave the Broncos fans a hammer blow, declaring, « Probably the Gold Coast Titans, mate »

Smith has yet to officially announce whether Sunday’s NRL Grand Final against Penrith will be the last game of his legendary career

The 37-year-old recently bought a home on the Gold Coast and has been linked with a move to both the Broncos and the Titans in recent months if he decides to play next season

However, there is speculation his ties to former Queensland coach and senior Gold Coast official Mal Meninga could see him join the Titans.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Smith confirmed he would make a call on his future as a player « sometime after the grand finale »

The Storm also has New Zealand test hooker Brandon Smith and young pistol Harry Grant on their roster and are sweating over a decision from the captain

Grant caused a stir last month when he told the crowd at an official Wests Tigers reception that he wouldn’t be back in The Storm next season if Smith plays

Several reports have also suggested that Brandon Smith will seek release if Cameron signs for a 20th campaign with the Storm

Smith added when asked what factors influenced or will influence his decision: « I think it depends more on whether I want to do it more.

« … For me, it’s about weighing that (the commitment it takes to play in the NRL)

« It’s no secret that I get along a bit now, I’m 37 and that means my family is growing too and my kids are starting to age a bit

« My oldest daughter, she is 12 and 13 next year and they are starting to do a lot of things in their own life

« It’s not really how good I feel playing or if I can still make a difference on this side of football

Smith also revealed that Sunday’s decision maker result in the NRL will not affect his final appeal

« And a lot of people mentioned if we got a good result on Sunday, but I can confirm that on your show today, buddy, it won’t make any difference whether we win or lose, » he said. -he declares

« Most definitely I want to go there and we want to win, no doubt about it, but that won’t determine whether or not I play next year or not »
