Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid « injured » Real Sociedad but David Silva, who signed for the club, was a welcome « shock, » said Nacho Monreal.

Odegaard joined Sociedad from Madrid for a season in July 2019. This was his third temporary move from Santiago Bernabeu since arriving in the Spanish capital four years ago.

The Norwegian was a huge hit at Anoeta as he contributed four goals and six assists to secure Imanol Alguacil’s side sixth in La Liga and also played a key role in their run to the Copa Del Rey final postponed until fans are allowed to return to the stadiums.

Madrid sent the 21-year-old to Sociedad with the option of either extending his loan for another year or bringing him back to the Bernabeu at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Monreal says Los Blancos initially decided to leave Odegaard at San Sebastian before making a U-turn that disappointed the entire squad.

However, the Sociedad defender was pleasantly surprised when Silva joined the club following the departure of the Madrid-based lender from Manchester City. Martin Odegaard would stay: that’s what they said.

“But then Madrid decided to take it back. That hurts. We were a little orphaned, but the club handled it very, very well and, above all, very quickly.

« In less than two days we lost Odegaard and signed Silva. You have to welcome that. ”

Monreal added that Silva joined Anoeta after a hugely successful 10 year stint at the Etihad Stadium: « I had heard the club were working on a signing but it never occurred to me that it was David could be. « .

« It was a shock. He had been in the city for 10 years, it was about Lazio or about leaving Europe. There are many places he could have gone. ”

Silva’s presence took Sociedad to even greater heights at the start of the current season. Alguacil’s men are at the top of the league with 23 points after their first ten games.

« When I signed I knew the club, the players and I knew we would play good football, that we would be at the top, » said Monreal of the Basque team’s recent progress.

« In detail, this is probably the best squad I’ve ever been on. We have made a leap in quality this season. ”

When asked if Sociedad can keep their current form to face a real title challenge, Monreal replied, “Nobody knows. Logically, the favorites are Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico.

« Ask someone. But I’ve seen Leicester win the [Premier] League. Everyone said, « They slide away, they slide away, they slide away, » and they didn’t slide away.

« It’s nice to look at the table, but let’s see where we are tomorrow and what we are fighting for in February and March. If we’re up there for the 30th. Reach week, wonderful.

« And if so, we veterans will have to play a role. We just think about enjoying this. But one thing is clear to me: we are not afraid of a team. We don’t feel inferior to anyone. ”
