He once said the Queenslanders were two heads ahead of a clash with Home State and waged a war of words with AFL bad boy Barry Hall before their crossed fight last November
But NRL legend Paul Gallen has vowed to take a reverent tone ahead of his heavyweight boxing clash against former UFC knockout specialist Mark Hunt
Gallen and Hunt will face off at Bankwest Stadium in a co-main event with rising Australian star Tim Tszyu and New Zealand Bowyn Morgan on December 16
The former Cronulla captain, who suffered a bicep torn earlier this month, admits there will be no love lost before the fight, but said fans are hoping the ordinary pre-fight speech would be disappointed
« Boxing has a bit of a tradition for a bit of gossip as we know and I’m totally ready when it’s needed or when I feel it like we saw with Barry Hall after the ‘having met, there was a real dislike and that’s how it happened, « Gallen told Wide World of Sports Radio
« But me and Mark have known each other for a long time and there is no need to make things up here or talk shit just for the sake of trying to pump people up
« It’s a pretty big event without it, it’s going to be a huge event for boxing and a huge event for NSW after the year we’ve had and it just doesn’t need anything like it
« I’m sure there will be a bit of animosity that leads to it without a doubt, he thinks he can win and I think I can win, so there is going to be a bit of animosity there. -bas
« But you don’t have to go out of our way to talk shit about each other and the fight will sell itself »
Mixed martial arts specialist Hunt, 46, recorded a loss and a draw in his only two professional boxing matches over 20 years ago
Gallen enters the fight with a 9-0-1 record, his only flaw a controversial draw in his last outing against Hall
The 39-year-old former Cronulla captain added of the bicep injury he sustained in a bout over three weeks ago: « The fight is in seven. weeks today, so I’m going to have another two weeks without doing a hell of a lot and probably in about three weeks I’ll be starting the fight again, which will give me four weeks of fighting in the fight
« I’ve been training all year, so it’s not like I’m starting from scratch, so it’s okay »
