In a new position in Microsoft’s developer division, Guido van Rossum hints at how he and the company are working to improve the Python language

In a tweet, Guido van Rossum, the creator of the Python programming language, announced that he will join Microsoft’s developer division, as he will work to improve Python on Windows and Python in general.

“I decided retirement was boring,” Van Rossum wrote in announcing he was joining Microsoft’s developer division. « To do what? Lots of options for him to say! But it would definitely make using Python better (and not just on Windows :-). There is a lot of open source here. See this space.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft and Python have come together. Microsoft has provided Python developers with widely used add-ons for Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code Editor.

Its latest generation, Pylance, provides high-speed type checking and code analysis for Python code databases, along with support for Python tools such as Jupyter Notebook. Another recent Microsoft / Python project, Playwright, provides a fast and convenient way to test Python web applications.

Microsoft has also contributed to the Python database directly in the past. A major addition to Python 3. Number 6 was PEP 523, a change to Python’s C API to enable debugging tools, or just-in-time compilers (like Microsoft’s Pyjion project), to intercept and override evaluation of Python’s code.

What Rossum hints at could easily fall into either of these two categories – Python tools or basic changes to Python itself.. There is no shortage of things that Van Rossum and Microsoft could strive to improve with Python.

Given the widespread use of Python throughout the world of software development, the widespread adoption of the language has also revealed many limitations created by its architectural options.. Installing and managing third-party modules in Python is still a bit neat and fragmented, with one standard project yet very minimal (Pip) and a host of more ambitious but conflicting alternatives (Poetry, Pipenv, etc.. . ).

Python also lacks a unified way to deploy stand-alone binaries, and it can still be difficult to run Python programs on multiple hardware centers.. All these areas, and many more, are ready to be worked on by Van Rossum and Microsoft.
