Tech3 MotoGP team principal Herve Poncharal admits he got « a bit angry » when rumors surfaced about Andrea Dovizioso, who will replace Iker Lecuona for 2021, in the 2020 season.

Lecuona was drafted to take the place allotted for Brad Binder at Tech3 in 2020 when KTM decided to add the South African to its factory group as a replacement for Johann Zarco.

20-year-old Lecuona admitted to Autosport that his move to MotoGP may have come « too early » after making his Moto2 debut in 2016 at the age of 16. in the championship.

Compared to his rookie contemporaries Binder and Alex Marquez, who had 145 and 135 Grand Prix starts before 2020, compared to Lecuona’s 56, there have been rumors that KTM are bringing Lecuona back in Moto2 and battling the outgoing Ducati Star Dovizioso could compete.

Dovizioso and KTM had talks about a ride in the preseason 2021, but those talks got nowhere.

Speaking to Autosport about an upcoming feature on Lecuona, Poncharal says he’s upset about repeatedly asking questions about Lecuona’s future, despite KTM confirming its place in the preseason in 2021.

« The good thing about Iker is that he trusts the team and trusts me very much, » said Poncharal.

« And I said to him, ‘Iker, it doesn’t matter what you hear, it doesn’t matter what crap you hear or read.

« ‘Consult your work and I’ll tell you, you will be my driver in 2020 and you will be my driver in 21, 100%. So don’t pay too much attention to it. ‘.

« Some journalists who think they’re a bit [like] superstars kept asking [about Dovizioso to replace Lecuona], and at one point I was a little angry because it doesn’t matter how many times you say [it doesn’t happen], you have the feeling that sometimes there is a higher force or a higher person behind me telling me to change [my line-up]]. «

Dovizioso rode for Tech3 in the Yamaha days of 2012 and took six podiums. Poncharal admitted that he has « so much respect » for the Italian.

But the Frenchman insists that Lecuona will return to Moto2 in 2021 in favor of Dovizioso, which was never an option.

« Andrea spoke to KTM over the winter and they failed to reach an agreement, » he adds.

« But then in August they [the media] came to me and I told everyone and the journalists that there was a lack of respect [these rumors].

« We signed a contract with Iker and why should we tell him to return to Moto2? Riders are not toilet paper that you take and throw away.

« We took him off Moto2, we took a big risk because it would have been easier to keep him in Moto2 for another year, to win races and why not the championship, and then to MotoGP switch. « .

« So he followed us, he trusted us and after a year of starting to show his potential we tell him to return to Moto2. never.

« That would never happen to me and I’m not glad that didn’t happen because it would never happen.

« It was just a few superstar media outlets who know more than anyone who made their plans and thought this was going to be more exciting. «
