Scott Morrison has released a revised Departmental Statement with changes to the trade and immigration portfolios as part of the reshuffle.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced changes to his ministerial line-up, with Dan Tehan taking over as Minister of Commerce and Alex Hawke taking over as Minister of Immigration.
The reshuffle was triggered by the resignation of former Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, who is taking over the management of the Paris-based organization for economic cooperation and development.
Simon Birmingham has already taken over Mr. Cormann’s financial role and government leadership in the Senate.
Mr. Tehan – a former diplomat – will ditch the education portfolio and take the trade role as Australia grapples with increasingly strained relations with China.
Responsibilities for care of the elderly have also been transferred to the Cabinet in response to concerns raised by a royal commission in the sector.
Health Secretary Greg Hunt is taking on that responsibility from Richard Colbeck after his performance in that role this year attracted criticism.
Alex Hawke was Minister for International Development and the Pacific before assuming his new role as Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.
David Coleman, who was on vacation this year, will return to Parliament as Deputy Minister for Prime Ministers and Suicide Prevention.
Alan Tudge, who served as Minister of Immigration in his absence, will take on the role of Minister for Education and Youth.
Former SAS soldier Andrew Hastie also takes on the role of Assistant Secretary of Defense.
