A Skywhale family will take to the skies over Canberra in February, with the National Gallery of Australia confirming the maiden flight of another hot air balloon sculpture.
In 2013, the 100-foot Skywhale by artist Patricia Piccinini was launched on the occasion of the city’s 100th anniversary. The response was very different from Canberra’s typical criticisms – certainly no one thought it was boring.
The new balloon was announced in 2019 and bookings are expected to open for a first flight event this month.
« Skywhalepapa is very different from the Skywhale, » Piccinini told Guardian Australia in 2019. “He has those bulky arms that he uses to collect and protect the babies.
“It’s bigger and more vertical. I’m not sure he’s traditionally masculine, but he’s got some strength I think, but also gentleness. He is surrounded by a group of Skywhale children who are cared for by the man. ”
Two more flights are scheduled for 8. March and 3. Planned April, weather permitting. The sculptures will also float across the Australian skies as a touring exhibit at the National Gallery.
