Becky Hammon became the first woman to head an NBA team and take over the San Antonio Spurs after coach Gregg Popovich was thrown out in a 121-107 loss to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.
James turned 36. Birthday with 26 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the third double-digit victory of the Lakers. The teams will participate in the set of two games on Friday night.
Popovich was kicked out by official Tony Brown at 3:56 in the second quarter. Popovich yelled at Brown and walked into the court after failing to call DeMar DeRozan’s attempted layup and a subsequent rebound attempt by Drew Eubanks. Popovich was applauded as he left the court by several family members of the team present.
Hammon took over the groups during the time-outs and went to the sidelines after Popovich was ejected. Hammon was the first full-time assistant coach in the history of the league.
Tim Duncan took over last season when Popovich was kicked out against Portland in November. 16, 2019. The Hall of Famer chose not to return as an assistant this season.
A three-time All-American in the state of Colorado, Hammon played for the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars in the WNBA and overseas before retiring in 2014 to join Popovich’s staff.
Dennis Schroder had 21 points, Anthony Davis had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers. Dejounte Murray had 29 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Spurs.
